No one is questioning the legitimacy of humanitarian aid. What’s in question is CUPE Ontario’s mandate. CUPE Ontario members pay dues to get representation in the workplace, not to have union executives make foreign policy decisions on their behalf. CUPE Ontario isn’t a government agency or an NGO - it is a labour union. Its sole mission should be to represent workers at the bargaining table, defend their rights, and improve their working conditions.
So why is CUPE Ontario spending $100,000 of union funds on overseas causes, while thousands of its own members are still waiting for fair contracts, safer job sites, and real answers on pensions and cost-of-living support?
